One Health Central and Eastern Africa (OHCEA) and the Makerere University School of Public Health recently received research funding for an EcoHealth Chair on Human and Animal Health in Protected Ecosystems of Central and Eastern Africa. The EcoHealth approach emphasizes working with all stakeholders in identifying health vulnerabilities in communities using participatory methodologies. The research area is at the human-animal-wildlife interface in fishing enclaves and cattle keeping communities inside Queen Elizabeth National Park. The applicants will be stationed in the communities during the identification, ranking, and prioritization/sampling for health vulnerabilities phase and later perform quantification and characterization studies at their institutions.
Requirements for the PhD applicants (4 positions):
Prospective PhD applicants to the Ecohealth project should meet the following minimum requirements

  2. Have a Master’s degree relevant to the proposed field of study;
  3. Be willing to spend some considerable time in the study area, Queen Elizabeth National Park, Uganda and have their studies at Makerere University.
  4. Show willingness to work in a multidisciplinary and multistakeholder environment and be able to meet tight deadlines.

Applicants from biomedical, social sciences, economics, statistics, public health and any other disciplines related to EcoHealth are particularly encouraged to apply. Females are encouraged to apply. Funding is available for ONLY three years of study. The positions are FULL time and funding will cover tuition, research costs and a modest stipend.
Requirements for the Master’s degree positions (4 positions)
Only registered students in their second year of study will be considered for support. Research will have to be conducted in and around Queen Elizabeth National Park. Scholarship will cover research costs ONLY. Applicants must provide proof of admission and normal progress at time of application.

Application process
Application for both Masters and PhD applicants should not exceed 10 pages and must include the suggested study topic, Abstract, Introduction, problem statement, objectives, study rationale, materials and methods. A CV highlighting suitability as per above requirements and a letter of motivation should be provided.
